👀 Part 5: Attention Follows Value, Not Just Directions

Today

A lot of advice on getting students attention still sounds like this:

  • Explain it clearly.
  • Tell students to focus.
  • Repeat directions.

But attention does not work like that.

Attention follows value, relevance, and state.

What We Did Last Time We Were Together

Last post, we talked about how the environment can shape what the brain can access in real time.

This week, we’re bringing that same concept into instruction.

Because even really strong teachers can struggle when the brain does not find the learning WORTHY of its very previous energy 🍃, or when the nervous system does not have enough stability to stay with it.

What We’re Talking About Today

Perceived value = whether the brain believes something is worth time, effort, or attention.

Relevance = how connected the learning feels to the student’s life, identity, interests, or current concerns.

That matters because attention is not just a “control it” skill.

It is an allocation or prioritization system and it’s got a hierarchy that you, me, and mother there's a herself can’t touch.

The brain is constantly sorting, prioritizing, and reasoning with:

  • What matters?
  • What feels worth it?
  • What can it tolerate?
  • What has the biggest payoff?
  • What is the most threatening thing here?

That is why a student can appear disengaged during one version of a task and deeply engaged during another version that feels more relevant, social, imaginative, or “worldly” meaningful.

What This Looks Like in a Real Classroom

The infamous: “When am I ever going to use this?”

That’s NOT disrespect.

I REPEAT. THAT IS NOT DISRESPECT.

It might be “socially inappropriate depending on who you ask.
Me? I’d have just answered the question because I think it’s a really good question 🤷♀️.

Or maybe a student repeats the directions back perfectly but once they’re by themselves can’t start.
It may be a regulation problem, a task-entry problem, or a value/energy cost problem.

Or a student struggles with writing…
until the topic becomes something personal, weird, unfair, funny, future-based, or socially meaningful.

Same skill, learning target, etc.,.
But completely different outcomes.

You are allowing for variability and keeping the learning salient.

Designing for relevancy before designing for mastery doesn’t just change engagement, it allows for a more forgiving framework which allows flexibility for variability AND it keeps the learning salient so the brain can see it..

If the learning cannot connect to something students already know, already felt, already lived, or already care about, the brain has fewer reasons to treat it as WORTH holding onto. That does not replace good instruction. It makes good instruction easier for the brain to keep.

What Teachers Should Do With This 👇

Urgency

Give students a reason they need this right now.

Not “for adulthood.”
Not “for the test in three months.”

Try:

  • “You’re going to use this in 4 minutes to prove which side makes more sense.”
  • “There’s one detail here that changes the whole argument.”
  • “You need to figure out which source you would trust and why.”

Urgency here is about immediate cognitive payoff. The brain doesn’t just know it should feel urgency, it actually feels the tug of urgency.

Novelty

Keep the WHAT their learning stable.
Vary the routes the learning can take to get in.

That may look like providing a few of the following as options:

  • compare before define 
  • predict before explain
  • argue before summarize
  • sort before label
  • sketch before write
  • rank before discuss

Novelty works when it interrupts the brain’s autopilot, yes that’s actually a thing, and gives the brain a second look with a different angle at the learning.

Interest

This is where you build around:

  • voice
  • authenticity
  • contribution
  • identity
  • collaboration
  • imagination
  • meaningful output

Adolescent brains respond ESPECIALLY well to “what if?” questions, alternative futures, ethical tradeoffs, and social meaning.

Try:

  • “What would change if this law didn’t exist?”
  • “Would people be better off or worse off if money disappeared?”
  • “Who benefits from this system?”
  • “Which solution would you choose and what would it cost?”

Those questions matter because they offer a wide range of possibilities, perspective, and purpose.

There ISN’T a right answer.

The adolescent brain LOVES 🫶 questions that don’t have a right answer! They stimulate the exact area of the brain that is growing the most at that moment- the ventral medial PFC and the orbital frontal PFC- two regions the brain is working to shape into it’s 🤓 executive functioning system and it’s moral decision making system 😇.

Two things you can do tomorrow

  1. Rewrite one lesson opener so students must predict, compare, or judge before you start explaining.
  2. Take one independent task and add one immediate payoff: social meaning, relevance, or visible contribution.

Toolkit tie-in: 

In the Instruction Kit, use Emphasize Key Words here — not just to make the lesson look more organized, but to make it easier for students to connect the 👀 salience of the activity.

And use Checks for Understanding when you want to see whether students are cognitively engaged or just visibly compliant. A lot of “they’re following along” is not the same as “they are attaching meaning.”

Closing Thought

Attention is not something adults can command or force or really even manipulate because weirdly the brain is designed to notice that.

Attention is something the brain allocates based on value and emotional state.
